The Back of the Napkin (Expanded Edition): Solving Problems and Selling Ideas with Pictures
The acclaimed bestseller about visual problem solving-now bigger and better
'There is no more powerful way to prove that we know something well than to draw a simple picture of it. And there is no more powerful way to see hidden solutions than to pick up a pen and draw out the pieces of our problem.'
So writes Dan Roam in The Back of the Napkin, the international bestseller that proves that a simple drawing on a humble napkin can be more powerful than the slickest PowerPoint presentation. Drawing on twenty years of experience and the latest discoveries in vision science, Roam teaches readers how to clarify any problem or sell any idea using a simple set of tools.
He reveals that everyone is born with a talent for visual thinking, even those who swear they can't draw. And he shows how thinking with pictures can help you discover and develop new ideas, solve problems in unexpected ways, and dramatically improve your ability to share your insights.
Take Herb Kelleher and Rollin King, who figured out how to beat the traditional hub-and-spoke airlines with a bar napkin and a pen. Three dots to represent Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. Three arrows to show direct flights. Problem solved, and the picture made it easy to sell Southwest Airlines to investors and customers.
Now with more color, bigger pictures, and additional content, this new edition does an even better job of helping you literally see the world in a new way. Join the teachers, project managers, doctors, engineers, assembly-line workers, pilots, football coaches, marine drill instructors, financial analysts, students, parents, and lawyers who have discovered the power of solving problems with pictures.

Difficult Beauty - Lily of the Valley
In the thousands of photos that I have taken, this beautiful little flower (my wife's favorite) has got to be my most difficult subject. I took about a hundred photos of these last Saturday and I'm not completely happy with any of them. Why are they a challenge? 1) The top flower is usually no more than 4 inches off the ground, so there were more than a few shots my chin was in the dirt.2) They like to live in the shadows, so you need light and if they don't have some light directly illuminating them they look washed out.3) Because of the need for light, you must shoot them with a large aperture in order to get the light, but with a large aperture, you lose depth of field. so focus blur is a problem because every little flower is at a different distance from the lens. 4) Due to the distance from the ground and a lot of plants around them, you can't use a tripod. So, if you reduce the aperture to improve depth of field, you need a lower shutter speed, but you must hand hold the camera so lens movement blur is a problem.5) Increasing the ISO to enable smaller apertures increase photo graininess too much for my liking. If anyone has any tricks let me know. I will have my chin in the dirt again this Saturday to see if I can do any better.

Guesstimation is a book that unlocks the power of approximation--it's popular mathematics rounded to the nearest power of ten! The ability to estimate is an important skill in daily life. More and more leading businesses today use estimation questions in interviews to test applicants' abilities to think on their feet. Guesstimation enables anyone with basic math and science skills to estimate virtually anything--quickly--using plausible assumptions and elementary arithmetic.
Lawrence Weinstein and John Adam present an eclectic array of estimation problems that range from devilishly simple to quite sophisticated and from serious real-world concerns to downright silly ones. How long would it take a running faucet to fill the inverted dome of the Capitol? What is the total length of all the pickles consumed in the US in one year? What are the relative merits of internal-combustion and electric cars, of coal and nuclear energy? The problems are marvelously diverse, yet the skills to solve them are the same. The authors show how easy it is to derive useful ballpark estimates by breaking complex problems into simpler, more manageable ones--and how there can be many paths to the right answer. The book is written in a question-and-answer format with lots of hints along the way. It includes a handy appendix summarizing the few formulas and basic science concepts needed, and its small size and French-fold design make it conveniently portable. Illustrated with humorous pen-and-ink sketches, Guesstimation will delight popular-math enthusiasts and is ideal for the classroom.

Our clients tell us: complexity, ambiguity, and uncertainty dominate their world.

As a solution, we offer the most powerful processing engine in the world: your visual mind.

Why? Because the antidote to uncertainty isn’t certainty; it’s CLARITY.

SPEED

The fastest way to clarify complexity isn’t discussion, data retrieval, or systems analysis; it’s DRAWING. Consider this: your visual mind consumes more than half the neurons in your brain — and processes information thousands of times faster than talking. Knowing that, why wouldn’t you want to be more visual?

ALIGNMENT

The research is now conclusive: the best way to share an idea is to draw it out. When your teams need to “be on the same page,” they win through the skill of rapid VISUAL STORYTELLING. Remember: drawing for clarity isn’t art; drawing is good thinking made clear.

ENGAGEMENT

When people can see what they need to do, they are infinitely more likely — and more capable! — of doing it. When coordinated action is required, the best guide is a crystal-clear ROADMAP. People who see the WHY and the HOW get the job done.
